Tortilis Camp is named after the flat-topped, umbrella thorn tree, the Acacia tortilis, and is situated in one of Amboseli's areas of Acacia Tortilis woodland, with the majestic backdrop of Africa's highest mountain, and the world’s highest free-standing mountain – the snow-capped Kilimanjaro.
Game drives, walks, sundowners and bush meals take place both inside the park, and within a private 30,000 acre game concession. The tents are all spacious, with king or twin beds and elegant, en suite bathrooms. There is a main lounge, bar and dining area, all exquisitely built with natural materials and thatched roofs, with magnificent views of Kilimanjaro.

Habituated elephant herds ~ Amboseli is home to elephant families that have been closely followed and studied by world renowned researcher, Cynthia Moss, for over 40 years. Tortilis’ guides know the families and their histories intimately. These are some of the biggest elephants seen in Africa, as they have been protected for generations.
“Private Amboseli” ~ Tortilis is away from other lodges, on the unspoilt western boundary of the National Park, closest to the mountain. Guests can enjoy game drives, walks & bush meals in privacy.

The central areas have cool gardens with a sunny veranda and swimming pool to enjoy during the day, and cosy log fires in the lounge and dining room during the chilly evenings.
The camp is based within the private 62,000 acre wildlife conservancy, home to 10% of Kenya's black rhino population, and the single largest population of Grevy's zebra in the world. Lewa reinvests all the profits generated from tourism into its core programs. When you visit Lewa Safari Camp, you contribute to helping thousands of people from different backgrounds and cultures to improve their lives, and give their children a future, at the same time as ensuring Africa's wildlife has a stable home.

Our newly refurbished spacious canvas tents are well-appointed, with en-suite bathrooms, including flush toilets and running water showers (a few tents still have traditional safari showers for the authentic safari aficionados).
The camp has a private viewing deck, which is very popular for sundowners or morning tea and coffee before a guided bush walk. Nothing rivals sitting around the campfire listening to the sounds of the African night. Enjoying extended game drives in the best equipped 4x4 game drive vehicles, clients participate in the most unique wildlife experience in the world. Elephant Pepper Camp brings people to the heart of the wilderness ~ no traffic, no permanent structures, just the sights and sounds of the African bush.
Taste of elegant safari from years gone by ~ Although extremely comfortable with spacious tents, en-suite bathrooms, gourmet food and elegant furnishings, the camp is very low key, with no noise to interfere with the sounds of the bush and resident lion pride!
Children get back to nature ~ From fiercely contested croquet matches in the lazy afternoons, to walks identifying tracks, learning to use a handmade bow and arrow, making a caste of Lion tracks and all those things that childhood used to be about.
Private Masai Mara ~ Mara North Conservancy is a privately managed conservancy in the core of the Masai Mara. Game driving is restricted to those vehicles belonging to lodges within the conservancy, so Elephant Pepper guests have this outstanding part of the Masai Mara, almost to themselves.
