Lodge Description

“Chiawa” – Soli language for the one who shares, an appropriate name for such a camp that also honours the local people and their traditions.

The family owned and operated, multi-award-winning Chiawa Camp is located in the stunning Lower Zambezi National Park, along the banks of the mighty Zambezi River. Zambia’s premier luxury safari camp, Chiawa offers up a diverse range of activities, including game drives, game walks, canoeing, boating and angling, all in the company of Africa’s finest guides.

Each of the luxury tents boast spectacular views over the Zambezi River and its vast array of resident wildlife. Elephant, lion, leopard, hippo and much more, occupy this gorgeous region of Zambia.

The creative culinary team at the Chiawa Camp ensure meals are of the highest standard, from seasonal menus developed and enhanced over time.

Along with Chiawa’s renowned dedication to its guests, staff, local communities and conservation, allow yourself to share in Chiawa’s passion, so that you can enjoy one of Africa’s finest safari camps and the wildlife adventure of a lifetime.

Safari Tents I-VI
These timeless safari tents offer plenty of space and classic luxury, yet utterly appropriate to the ethos of Chiawa Camp and the environment it strives to protect.

Taking inspiration from Grant & Lynsey’s own bush home, we are confident they provide the perfect balance of form and function, offering guests privacy, comfort, convenience and elegance.

Views of the Zambezi River can be experienced from a gorgeous split-level timber deck with daybeds and comfortable, locally made furniture. All of this makes for an ideal mix of modern and historic Africa.

All of the luxury tented accommodation options feature super-king size beds with pure cotton linens and a huge mosquito net, en-suite bathrooms with indoor and outdoor showers, a ball & claw bath, and his & hers washbasins complete with Charlotte Rhys amenities

Safari Tents VII & VIII
These two luxury safari tents house their bathrooms on the side, and feature views quartering onto the Zambezi River and the usually dry Chowe floodplains, which attract a variety of wildlife, making for excellent game viewing from your bed, deck, bath or shower. These rooms catch the afternoon sun and so have thatched roofs for additional cover.

The Safari Suite
Built from scratch in 2017 on the site of the old honeymoon tent, the “Safari Suite” redefines luxury safari accommodation for Zambia. Perched about 3 elephants high above the Zambezi and its flood plains with the most commanding view in the Lower Zambezi, the Safari Suite is private, spacious and breathtaking.

A sanctuary of almost 220 square meters, the Safari Suite comprises of a bedroom with a massive king size bed, a gorgeous bathroom with ball & claw bath and his and hers washbasins with views to the Zambezi, a loo and shower, a lounge with couches, arm chairs and daybeds (that convert attractively and conveniently if accommodating a family – kids of 5 years and older welcome if staying in the Safari Suite), a guest loo and washbasin all opening onto a 16m wide series of folding/sliding screen doors out to an outdoor shower, outdoor dining, an outdoor lounge, private fireplace, and a 16 square meter plunge pool.

Four overhead fans and international plug points with 24/7 power and free wifi make the Safari Suite a retreat that is difficult to leave, even for the amazing game viewing and guiding.

The Camp
Chiawa Camp blends in effortlessly with its idyllic surroundings, and provides a retreat which guests are invited to make their home away from home. Guests receive the friendliest of welcomes, the biggest of smiles and leave as friends to return time and again, to experience the very best in Africa.

On the banks of the Zambezi River, under a grove of evergreen Mahogany trees, Chiawa Camp holds the prime position in the heart of Zambia’s Lower Zambezi National Park.

It is at this very spot where the Cumings Family first explored this area for themselves decades ago, the place where David Livingstone ventured nearly 150 years previously, and where, in 1989, they created the very first photo safari operation in the Lower Zambezi National Park. Through their efforts, Chiawa has since become one of Africa’s most desirable, sought after safari destinations.

A stunning thatched lounge/bar area with upstairs viewing deck provides one of the best views of the Zambezi River, and a fantastic setting to watch the sun set over another day in Africa. After enjoying Chiawa’s renowned cuisine on the al-fresco dining veranda, one can relax by the open camp fire with a cocktail in-hand, reminiscing upon the day’s adventures before retiring for the night. Each of the tents are a sanctuary of luxury and tranquillity.

Also available for guests’ enjoyment and relaxation are two perfectly positioned game viewing hides and a gorgeous swimming pool with timber sun deck overlooking the Zambezi.

For the more active, a small but well equipped, secluded Exercise Area with a splendid view of the Zambezi is available for guests who might wish to work off some calories or keep up their fitness levels.

Accommodation
The tents all have timber floors and verandas with excellent views and are accessible by paths running behind them, to maximise privacy.

All share ample comforts, conveniences and unexpected luxuries, complemented by high quality, eco-friendly amenities. These include:

Free WiFi
• 24/7 lighting and charging facilities (220v UK plugs)
• 24/7 hot & cold running water
• Super-King size beds
• Egyptian cotton linens
• His & Hers washbasins
• Indoor and outdoor showers
• Ball & Claw Baths

We believe these tents set the standard for luxury Lower Zambezi National Park accommodation; however they still retain the rustic and unpretentious feel that Chiawa is so well-loved for.

Tents VII, VIII & Safari Suite all overlook the dry riverbed with quartering views of the Zambezi River whereas Tents I – VI face the Zambezi directly.
