Olive Grove Guesthouse, Windhoek
Olive Grove is a small upmarket accommodation establishment situated close to Windhoek city centre in a quiet, peaceful area. Recently completely refurbished, each room has been decorated and painted with new colour schemes allowing a different feel, but with the same elegant and simplistic emphasis on décor.

The newly renovated, open-plan kitchen allows guests to see how meals are prepared, while they enjoy a drink in the lounge. The menu was also reinvented and is now fully a la carte, quite unique for a guesthouse. Home-style food is rounded off with great presentation, pushing up the level of the guesthouse dining experience. The upper deck has been revamped into a private dining corner, with two Moroccan-style sections, for guests to get comfy on the large pillows and enjoy the ambience and view from the top.

The on-site Wellness Room offers a selection of professional services, to assist guests on their journey towards inner and outer well-being.

Whilst each of the ten rooms and one suite cater for every need of the most discerning traveller, the emphasis remains one of simplicity and elegance.
Kulala Desert Lodge
Unrivalled access to the red dunes of Sossusvlei

Family-friendly Kulala Desert Lodge is located within the arid Namib Desert on the 27 000-hectare (67 000-acre) private Kulala Wilderness Reserve. Comprising 23 thatched and canvas "kulalas" with en-suite bathrooms and verandas, each unit is built on a wooden platform to catch the cooling breezes and has a deck on the flat rooftop for sleep-outs under the stars. There are also three tents which can accommodate a family of four each.
The convivial main area includes a lounge, bar, dining area, plunge pool, and wrap-around veranda overlooking the riverbed – a perfect location to view and photograph the desert vista and to contemplate the day’s exciting activities.

Highlights
  • This is the closest point of access to the iconic dunes of Sossusvlei
  • Explore the dramatic Kulala Wilderness Reserve by quad bike, hot air balloon, nature drive or on foot
  • The perfect location to view and photograph Namib Desert scenery

Wildlife at Kulala Desert Lodge
Desert-adapted wildlife to be seen on the Kulala Wilderness Reserve includes ostrich, springbok, gemsbok, spotted hyaena and the occasional brown hyaena. Smaller creatures such as bat-eared fox, black-backed jackal, porcupine, Cape fox and aardwolf can also be seen. One bird, the aptly named dune lark, has its entire global distribution limited to the area. A surprisingly diverse array of insects, reptiles and rodents make their home around Kulala Desert Lodge. At dusk the call of barking geckoes can be heard, and walks reveal the smaller creatures - the buck-spoor spider with its multi-entrance burrow or the ambush specialist antlion, to name but a few.

Things to do at Kulala Desert Lodge
Activities revolve around early morning guided drives to the dunes of Sossusvlei through the private gate on the Tsauchab River, as well as nature drives and walks on the private Kulala Wilderness Reserve.

Visit Sossusvlei and Dead Vlei
World-famous Sossusvlei is both the name for the area in general as well as an enormous clay pan, flanked by the enormous sand dunes. Nearby, at the foot of some these dunes the skeletons of trees dominate the landscape, where once water flowed. This is known as Dead Vlei.

Visit Sesriem Canyon
This fascinating geographical formation is well worth a visit. The result of millions of years where water carved its way into the earth, Sesriem Canyon is today three kilometres long. Views from the top are breathtaking while walks through the canyon reveal distinct geographical layers which were laid down over aeons.

Nature drives
The 37 000-hectare private Kulala Nature Reserve offers visitors exclusive wildlife-viewing opportunities which include the likes of gemsbok (oryx), bat-eared fox, brown hyaena and birdlife. Enjoy a coffee or sunder stop in scenic parts of the reserve as a highlight.

Walking trails
Walking trails focus on becoming immersed in this remote area, as well as its scenic beauty and the fascinating, and surprisingly, diverse array of insects, reptiles and rodents which make this dry and harsh region their home. The Tsauchab River Trail takes a stroll along the dry riverbed close by the camp.

The sundowner tour
Set out in the late afternoon for a nature drive and complete your excursion in a remote and dramatic spot on the reserve, sipping a gin and tonic while watching the sun set over the distant mountains or dunes.

Star bed
Sleep out under the starry starry skies of the Namib and be lulled to sleep by the sounds of Africa on the roof or your unit.

Guided quad-biking*
Eco-sensitive quad biking through the private Kulala Wilderness Reserve will allow you to take in those incredible views, feel the wind through your hair, and catch a glimpse of the denizens of the desert.* This activity is at additional cost.

Hot air balloon safari*
The balloon safari on the Kulala Wilderness Reserve offers a truly unique experience to soar silently above the magnificent sand dunes and desert, with a champagne breakfast being served at your landing site. *This activity is at additional cost and is closed from 15 January to 15 February.
Doro Nawas Camp
Glimpse a long-gone world through its art at Twyfelfontein

Doro Nawas Camp is located in the dry Aba-Huab River Valley, within the Doro !Nawas Conservancy in central Damaraland, and commands spectacular views of the Etendeka Mountains to the north and the red sandstone cliffs of Twyfelfontein in the south.
Accommodation comprises 16 units (including a family room): a mix of stone and canvas walls with wood and glass doors, shaded by a thatch roof. Each unit, designed to blend into the hillside, consists of a bedroom, en-suite bathroom (with outdoor shower) and a veranda for star gazing or sleep-outs. The main area is perched atop a rocky knoll offering unspoilt panoramic views from the indoor and outdoor dining areas, pool area, bar and a local curio area. A staircase to the flat roof leads to a place perfect for relaxing sundowners and star gazing.

Highlights
  • The ancient Twyfelfontein San rock art engravings, a World Heritage Site, is close by
  • Sleeping under the stars is a must in this pristine environment
  • An easily accessible base from which to see desert-adapted elephant

Wildlife at Doro Nawas Camp
This is a wonderful area for enjoying the dramatic Damaraland landscape. There are no large concentrations of wildlife; however this seemingly stark environment is amazingly home to a range of wildlife including desert-adapted elephant, gemsbok, springbok and variety of other species such as bat-eared fox and the occasional glimpse of black rhino and cheetah. Birdlife is excellent with several Namibian endemics, such as Damara hornbill, Carp's tit and Rüpell's korhaan.

Things to do at Doro Nawas Camp
An excellent base for self-drive and fly-in guests, activities here include nature drives and exploratory hikes to catch a glimpse of desert-adapted life, as well as discovering the geology and ancient rock engravings of this stark landscape.

Wildlife and scenic drives
While the landscape does not support huge herds, desert-adapted life such as springbok, gemsbok and even elephant do occur. We therefore offer nature drives in open Land Rovers which can end with a river lunch or scenic walk ending at "Little Table Mountain."
Geological excursionsVisit the ancient San rock art at Twylfelfontein, a World Heritage Site, as well as the Petrified Forest, Burnt Mountain and Organ Pipes, all incredible geological phenomena.

Cultural visits
Back of house tours, and camp chats about the Doro !Nawas Conservancy, the Damara/Nama language and traditions all give insight into the community, while the Damara Living Museum shows off the traditional culture of the Damara people.

Guided nature walks
Learn more about the flora and fauna in this incredibly harsh environment. Adaptation to the desert environment is the miracle of all that survives here.

Scorpion night walks
After dark, another realm of the Namib awakes. Walks reveal some of these captivating critters such scorpions which fluoresce under UV lights.

Star bed
Sleep out under the starry starry skies of the Namib and be lulled to sleep by the sounds of Africa on your veranda.

Star gazing
Namibia is known for its clear night skies, and with no light pollution this is the ideal spot from which to learn about the stars and planets that whirl above us.
Ongava Tented Camp
Immersed in the African Mopani bush, Ongava Tented Camp is a natural extension of this wild, wonderful landscape.

The classic safari style camp is tucked in a hidden valley at the foot of a dolomite hill in Ongava Game Reserve bordering Etosha National Park.
Eight large comfortable Meru-style tents all have en-suite facilities, open air showers and private verandas; the family unit sleeps four. The main area, built of stone, canvas and thatch, fronts onto a much-frequented waterhole; watching wildlife coming to drink from here or from the swimming pool is a favourite pastime.

Ongava’s proximity to Etosha allows for game drives in the Etosha National Park and on the Ongava Reserve itself. Other possibilities include guided walks, birding and visiting hides. Ongava holds one of the largest rhino custodianships for the Namibian government in the country and is one of the few private game reserves in southern Africa where guests can see both black and white rhino.
