Lodge Description

Purpose
Since 2001, Mombo has been the centre of a unique partnership between Wilderness Safaris and the Botswana Government in a pioneering rhino conservation programme that has seen healthy breeding populations of both Critically Endangered black rhino and Near Threatened white rhino reintroduced to and living in the Okavango Delta.

Place
Located just off the northern tip of Chief’s Island, the largest landmass in the Okavango, Mombo is considered the most fertile area in the Delta, with its mix of habitats attracting large herds followed by numbers and varieties of predators.

Overview
Long known as “the Place of Plenty,” Mombo boasts enormous concentrations of plains game and predators and is considered to be one of the best areas for game viewing in Africa. Rebuilt in 2018, Mombo aims to maintain the traditions and history of the camp, as well as to celebrate our Conservation Purpose - indeed, one of our greatest conservation successes: the reintroduction of black and white rhino into the wilds of Botswana.

Wildlife
The Mombo Traversing Area is highlighted by the massive concentrations of plains game and predators that live here. These include all the big cats, of which lion sightings are frequent. Leopard, spotted hyaena, large herds of buffalo, elephant, giraffe, blue wildebeest, Burchell's zebra and more abound, while cheetah and wild dog can occasionally be spotted moving through the area. It is here that black and white rhino were first reintroduced into the Delta, to be seen occasionally by a lucky few.

Accommodation
The tents afford sweeping views over a floodplain teeming with wildlife. The sitting room, separate bedroom and bathroom, indoor and outdoor showers and bathtub with copper and brass fittings all contribute to Wilderness Safaris' ideal of responsible luxury.

Number of Tents
This camp can accommodate 18 guests in total (16 adults and 2 children)

8 x Tents in total comprising: 7 x twin-bedded luxury tents each with two twin beds. 1 x family unit comprising two luxury canvas tents (both en-suite) sharing an entrance and deck. Mattress converters are available that transforms twin beds into double beds. To be arranged prior to arrival.
