Lodge Description
Traditional Tented Camp Set Amongst One Of The Greatest Regions To Observe Botswana's Spectacular Wildlife.
Sango Safari Camp is nestled in the shade of the trees overlooking the Khwai River. Situated on the outskirts of the traditional village of Khwai and bordering Moremi Game Reserve, the camp offers guests the perfect base from which to explore the wildlife and culture of this unique habitat. This intimate safari camp was named after the Sango Family – some of the original inhabitants of the Khwai area, who collaborated with Bush Ways to develop the camp. The Khwai area offers a unique variety of safari experiences due to its ideal position on the edge of the Okavango Delta. Although this region is known as the drier part of the Okavango Delta, the presence of the Khwai river provides a year-round water source attracting one of the most fantastic wildlife concentrations in Botswana, and allows Sango Safari Camp to offer both land-based and water-based activities.
Developed on the outskirts of the quaint village of Khwai, Sango Safari Camp offers a unique encounter with the local community and leads you right to the heart of Botswana. Located just outside the north-eastern boundaries of Moremi Game Reserve, Khwai is a small rural village hosting some 400 inhabitants, the majority of which are Babukahwe, more generally referred to as “river bushmen”.
The Khwai villagers founded in 2000 the Khwai Development Trust, empowering the community with the management of the surrounding natural wonders and resources and allowing the community to benefit from and get involved in the preservation of the environment and the development of sustainable tourism.
Khwai Development Trust runs the commonly called “Khwai Concession” with boasts an outstanding diversity of fauna and flora, being a pristine wilderness region bordering the unfenced Moremi Game Reserve.
Natural border between the government-ruled game reserve and the community-run concession, the Khwai river offers a constant water supply that plays a major part in the high concentration of game and the unparalleled wildlife encounters the Khwai area has become famous for. Founded in 1963, the Moremi Game Reserve ranks as one of the most beautiful reserves in Africa.
Moremi is situated in the central and eastern regions of the Okavango Delta and offers spectacular game viewing as well as bird watching opportunities, including all major naturally occurring herbivore and carnivore species in the region, and over 400 species of birds, many migratory and some endangered.
With a huge variety of different landscapes, a drive through the Moremi Game Reserve is always very fascinating and offers a true African safari adventure. Both wildlife areas, Khwai Concession and the Moremi Game Reserve, can easily be accessed from the Khwai village. Sango Safari Camp Is Ideally Located Along The Khwai River Forming A Natural Border Between Moremi Game Reserve And The Khwai Concession, With Animals Traveling Freely From One To The Other.
Situated on the river overlooking the Moremi and with access to both these magnificent wildlife areas, Sango Safari Camp is focused on delivering an exceptional wildlife experience – allowing guests to take advantage of a host of wildlife activities including; open vehicle game drives in Moremi and the Khwai area and night drives.
With a combination of permanent water, seasonal floodplains, open grasslands, riverine forests, and dry woodlands this incredibly rich habitat supports a diversity and abundance of mammals and birds rarely matched in northern Botswana. Sango Safari Camp invites you to share in this bounty. All activities are subject to seasonal availability and weather conditions. Self Drive guests must pre-book all activities and meals before travel.
