The Great Rift Valley runs through the centre and west of Tanzania forming volcanic mountains, highland plateaus, lakes and valleys - creating and enormous diversity of habitats and eco-systems, from snow-capped mountains, lush forests, salt and fresh water lakes, and fertile savannahs to sandy semi-desert.

Tanzania lies 1-12 degrees south of the equator, having mostly a tropical climate including dry and wet seasons which have relatively stable and pleasant temperatures, and allow year round safaris and game viewing.
