Lodge Description
Purpose
Thanks to our tree-planting project, this formerly degraded site has been rehabilitated to become a lush riverine woodland once more. We (guests included) continue to plant trees, even donating to renew other sites in Zambia. We also take pride in the community partnerships we have created here.
Place
Overlooking the Zambezi River and some of its islands, Toka Leya is the ideal combination of relaxation and adventure. Game drives and river cruises can be followed by a therapeutic treatment at our spa; tours of Victoria Falls, a nearby rural village and Livingstone town add cultural and historical diversity. Fishing, rhino tracking and plenty of adrenaline-filled activities add excitement to the experience.
Overview
One of the Seven Natural Wonders of the World, Victoria Falls is considered one of the largest waterfalls in the world, the flow rate of the cascading waters of the Zambezi River more than double that of Niagara Falls. This is an area of spectacular scenic beauty: from the Falls themselves to the broad, picturesque course of the Zambezi River upstream. Wildlife abounds in the area, particularly during the dry season, and can be viewed while boating on the river or on game drives in Mosi-oa-Tunya National Park upstream of the Falls. The principal town on the Zambezi’s Zambian bank is Livingstone, boasting a wealth of adrenaline activities and is known as the region’s adventure capital. The falls straddle the border between Zimbabwe and Zambia, and both countries share Victoria Falls’ World Heritage Site status.
Wildlife
Toka Leya overlooks the mighty Zambezi River where hippo, crocodile and elephant are often seen, as well as an incredible diversity of birdlife. It is also centrally located in the Mosi-oa-Tunya Park which hosts species such as buffalo, giraffe, zebra, wildebeest and white rhino. The occasional predator is also seen. Several sought-after bird species are found, including African finfoot, half-collared kingfisher, African skimmer (seasonal), Schalow's turaco and rock pratincole (seasonal).
