Makgadikgadi Pans National Park

South of the Okavango you can find the rarely visited Nxai Pan and Makgadikgadi Pans National Parks. These are part of an ancient lake that occupied the central area of Botswana that has dried thousands of years ago to form large Salt Pans that in heavy rainy seasons becomes a haven for Birdlife and other Desert dwelling animals. Here you can see large herds of Oryx, Springbok, Ostriches with the elusive Brown Hyena and Bat Eared Fox.

This Desert environment provides a stark contrast to the lush waterways of the Okavango and is a fascinating place to visit. The daily struggle of the wildlife to survive in such a parched landscape gives you an insight into the ecology of marginal land and the constant search for the sparse water supplies. These amazing Pans offer the opportunity to discover the truly wild and remote feeling that Botswana is famous for.
