Lodge Description

WELCOME TO MPALA JENA
“Relais & Châteaux stands for excellence as well as a journey through the six senses of experience, a value we share at Great Plains. When I sat down with a black piece of paper to design Mpala Jena I started with a reference to the Greater Zimbabwe Ruins with its stacked stone walls, but then added our signature canvass tented structures around them. We like the blend of ‘traditional’ and yet ‘fresh’ in all our camps, but I also like to have the design tell a story.”
– Dereck Joubert

Mpala Jena Camp is an exquisite tented camp, located in a private concession within the Zambezi National Park overlooking a beautiful stretch of Zambezi River and in the shade of indigenous trees.
The camp is named after a spring that runs through it, and this attracts an abundance of wildlife. Mpala Jena has a healthy population of wildlife including buffalo, elephant and lion with frequent sightings of rare Painted Dogs often seen against a backdrop of baobabs and giraffes, a look that is typical of this area. The camp is situated on the banks of the Zambezi River, so there are excellent bird-watching opportunities, particularly between November and April.

The camp’s four guest tents are under flowing canvas, with open (yet netted) views of the river and Moroccan influences throughout the décor, a reference to the early Arab explorer’s adventures up the Zambezi in search of gold in the 16th Century. Decking in front of the tent leads to a private plunge pool with views of the flowing waters of the Zambezi River. Mpala Jena Camp is one of the most environmentally innovative camps in Zambezi National Park; from the recycled hardwoods from the great Zimbabwe Railway line to the first fully solar (Telsa system) power plant in the country.

The camp is conveniently located just 16 kilometres from the centre of Victoria Falls town, with easy driving or boating access, but the ideal distance away from the hustle and bustle, allowing guests to remain immersed in a safari-atmosphere and relax in the incredible setting and wild habitat. Visit the famous Falls during the day and still listen to lions nearby your camp at night, the ideal combination.
